In 2008 the Valley Mounted Volunteers started out with our yearly certifications. The first was held on March 15th, and the second certification was held on March 30th. We hold two certifications each year in the spring so we are ready for any call out that might happen.

On April 13th members of our group traveled to Mt. Calvary for a grand opening of a new Fire station there. We were asked to come there to put on a short demonstration for them with our horses. We were also able to do a little training with our horses there because we were able to have our horses exposed to the landing of a helicopter, something we never had the opportunity to do until that day. You can see by the pictures they all handled it very well. We were all proud of our mounts that day.

We had two mock searches set up this Spring but Mother Nature did not want us to practice and both were canceled because of the weather.

We are looking at getting one going this fall before deer hunting starts.

In July we once again patrolled at Lifefest for Security and we enjoyed that also. Lifefest is a Christian rock festival held annually in Oshkosh, WI. It is great exposure for our horses to work on the grounds with so many people.

Aug 1 and 2 we will be patrolling in Greeenville. WI at their concert with our horses. We hope to ride in the Greenville parade at the end of August as well.

We hold monthly meeting at 5 Corners Supper Club in their basement at 7:00pm on the second Tuesday night of every month. This is located about 10 miles north of Appleton, WI. Please email for more info on the meetings.

HISTORY

In 2001 the Valley Mounted Volunteers began by talking to local law enforcement agencies to see how we could be of some assistance to them.  There are many reasons for thinking we could do so by using horses for a search and rescue operation.

  • A rider is up higher and able to see farther than someone walking.

  • Ground can be covered faster and for a longer time with horses.

  • Horses' keen sense of smell and eye sight will aid riders in finding victims.

  • Heavy objects are moved more easily by horses than by people.

  •  Horses would be able to assist E.M.S. to the scene.

  •  While 4 wheelers can be used in some areas, horses can go into areas that no vehicle can navigate; Horses also move with less noise allowing riders to listen for cries for help.

  •  Animals at large can be contained easier with horses than people.

Then other ways of assisting were explored.  In September of 2002, a cattle truck overturned on Hwy 41. (Read story) Here was the  break we needed, to show what the VMV could do.  We were able to assist in the rounding up and containment of the cattle.  Local fire and law enforcement agencies were impressed with the training of the horses and the teamwork of horse and rider.

The training used on VMV horses is of the same criteria that law enforcement agencies use for their mounted horses.  The Valley Mounted Volunteers were able to convince Outagamie county law enforcement to become involved with the group and even help train. A liaison officer attends our training sessions and meetings and helps set up practice scenarios.  Outagamie also offers guidelines and recommendations for handling sensitive areas while on a search.

The VMV is a great way for local horse people to give back to the community.  It also provides the opportunity to work with individual horses and show that horses are useful aids to our law enforcement.

We invite you to check us out.  The VMV holds local meetings and workshops periodically and have certification for members and their mounts in spring.  We are on call 24/7.
